Preparation and Courage!

Super Bowl XI Jim Tunney RefereeOn the TunneySide of Sports April 20, 2020 #792 Up next… Preparation and Courage!

After further review… At approximately 12:25 PM on Sunday, January 9, 1977, I was pacing the floor when a woman approached and asked if I was the referee for today’s game? Kickoff at 1:00 PM. We were just off the playing field of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. I had been in that stadium many times before, starting when I accompanied my dad as he officiated high school and junior college games there. On more than one of those games, Pasadena Junior College had a player (#28 I believe) named Jackie Robinson. (I write this April 15, 2020, 73 years after JRR broke into Major League Baseball) Further, I had played college football on that same field as well as having refereed high school, and college games there.

I was about to walk onto that field with 103,000 fans and an NBC broadcast team of Curt Gowdy and Don Meredith as well as Vicki Carr who was to sing “America the Beautiful” in place of our National Anthem awaiting. After I did identify myself as the referee for Super Bowl XI to be played between the Oakland Raiders and the Minnesota Vikings, the lady then asked, “Are you nervous?” “No, I answered, I’m never nervous!” “Really, she said, then what are you doing in the ladies’ room?”

I was not nervous, but certainly had great anticipation for what was about to take place. I recall that incident since all of us anticipate what we are facing with the COVID-19 Pandemic. As I prepared for Super Bowl XI, it was an honest preparation that left me with confidence for what I was about to face that Sunday afternoon.

The question now is, how confident are we with our preparation for what we face in this pandemic? Do we follow the suggested guidelines of consistent hand washing, safe distancing (6 feet), using face masks, and stay-at-home procedures? Or do we mull through ignoring those guidelines? It can happen in anything we perform on a regular basis.

The courage one faces in the realm of officiating is one of self-confidence. It’s that same belief we need to sustain during this never-before-experience we are now facing. There are times in every game where a referee, player or coach may let down their guard (that is a happening, not a position). That is when trouble often occurs.

Will you maintain all that is necessary to be safe during this pandemic?

Time On Our Hands

On the TunneySide of Sports April 13, 2020 #791 Up next… Time On Our Hands!

After further review… Preamble: Sports have often served a purpose during such times, as they can be a healing or unifying element!

These times of shelter-in-place with no sports or gatherings has placed an unusual strain on relationships. Before the kids just went off to school and dad or mom – or both – headed off to work in the morning not to be seen again until dinner time. This COVID-19 edict has given families opportunities to create ways to be together at home for work or play. However, as one longtime housewife said, “I love my husband and love being married to him (but as they say) ‘for better or for worse,’ — but not for lunch.”

With the lack of sporting events to attend and only former ones to watch on television, sports fans have a renewed interest in discussing who’s the G.O.A.T (greatest of all time) in every sporting event not only T*E*A*Ms but players and coaches. Although football season is not scheduled at this time of year, the NFL is approaching its 2020 draft this month (23rd -25th) and the obvious discussion of who will be number one, followed by who their favorite team will draft. BTW, if you haven’t heard, with the stay-at-home decree in place, there will be no mass gatherings of fans nor will coaches, general managers, or team personnel be allowed to meet as one. This year’s draft will be held virtually, meaning team personnel will be in their separate homes or offices working through Skype or Zoom or other tech means. Also, no hugging of the draftees by the commissioner on stage.

With New England Quarterback Tom Brady achieving free agency and choosing to move on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the discussion of who was the real force behind the Patriots long-time success – Brady or Head Coach Bill Belichick. They had been together 20 years and have taken the Patriots to 9 Super Bowls winning 6 of them. Brady has 4 Super Bowl MVP awards. Belichick has 300 NFL victories surpassed only by George Halas (318) and Don Shula (347).

The G.O.A.T. argument falls short in the opinion here. What credit is given to the offensive linemen who over these 20 years have protected Brady to be able to be a successful quarterback? Or the Patriots defensive unit who kept their opponents off the field so that Brady had more time on the field? Notwithstanding are the team’s offensive coordinators who provided the proper plays that Brady successfully achieved?

Will you log-in your thoughts on how to evaluate who is better — or do you care?

Holding onto Faith – not Fear!

NFL draftOn the TunneySide of Sports April 6, 2020 #790 Up next… Holding onto Faith – not Fear!

After further review… Sports have often served a purpose during such times, as they can be a healing or unifying element. This current COVID-19 has brought to my mind somewhat like- situations that have been in my history. My start with the National Football League began 60 years ago, let me relate two situations of which I have been a part.

At approximately 12:30 PM CDT on Friday, November 22, 1962, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as his motorcade turned onto Main Street in Dallas, Texas. The shock of an assassination of an American president in my life was overwhelming. There had been presidential assassinations in U.S. history, but this event was beyond belief. I was in my job as a vice-principal at Lincoln High School in Los Angeles. School was dismissed.

Moreover, I was in my third year as an NFL game official and scheduled to depart LAX the next day for my weekly game assignment, which was the Dallas Cowboys at Cleveland Browns. The NFL under the leadership of Commissioner Pete Rozelle had the difficult task of determining whether to play that game or not – as well as the rest of the NFL schedule. After much prayerful consideration – in a very short period of time – it was decided to play the full NFL schedule.

The pregame ceremonies in Cleveland Municipal Stadium were solemn and peaceful with a most fitting tribute to President Kennedy, except for the chorus of boos during the introduction of the Cowboys, since most of the uniformed Browns fans seemed to blame the city of Dallas for this untoward event. To play that game turned out to be the right decision.

The second tragedy occurred on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, when a series of attacks by the Islamic terrorist group Al-Qaeda against the U.S. destroyed the Twin Towers in Lower Manhattan New York City. While NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue had more time to decide whether to play the next Sundays games than did Rozelle (1962), the decision was nonetheless not an easy one. New York Jets Head Coach Herm Edwards led the charge to not play the games saying we (the Jets organization) were needed in the city to help with that tragedy. Those Sundays games and Monday (September 16 and 17) were postponed and played on January 6 and 7, 2002. This, too, was the right decision.

While there are no NFL games in April, the NFL is deciding, at this writing, if it should (and how and where) to conduct its 2020 NFL draft scheduled for April 23-25. With the shelter-in-place edit enforced, the draft must be held without a crowd – whether inside or out. We think it should go ahead with the draft. Our country needs some positive outlook.

Will you log-in your opinion about whether the NFL draft should be held as scheduled?
