Teachers are Coaches!

On the TunneySide of Sports January 27, 2020 #780 Up next… Teachers Are Coaches!

After further review… At age 12, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to be a coach. Certainly, my dad, who was my hero and mentor, had an influence on that decision. He coached only 8 years but attempted to guide me in other directions. Maybe the fact that those 8 years were during the Great Depression (the 1930s) had a bearing on his thinking. He worked three jobs (teacher/coach–sports official–playground director), which perhaps created a great financial and physical challenge. He lived to be only 59 years of age.

He was such a role model for me that I spent my school years studying coaches and teachers analyzing not only their teaching methods and style but the way they helped their students learn and behave. Yes, behave! The ones I  was able to learn from best were the ones who were interested in me as a person, not just what my grades were.

Later as an inner-city high school principal for 10 years I coached teachers to help them understand that in the classroom each of them was a coach. On the field or court, coaches want each player to be successful. Only when each player does that can the T*E*A*M be successful. In the classroom, it is not pitting one student against another, but getting the most out of each to become successful. Thus, my philosophy for schools is ‘Every kid is a winner!’

I was reminded of that as I watched the four head coaches in the NFL championship games a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been fortunate to be on the NFL field for more than three decades with some 300 NFL head coaches. Unfortunately, I will be omitting many of them as I cite these: Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs; Mike Vrabel, Tennessee Titans; Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers; and Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers. I observed not who won or lost, but how each interacted with his players. I was impressed.

In victory or defeat, each of these four displayed a mature manner and treated each of their players with respect. That doesn’t mean they weren’t tough on them. When discipline had to be done, each seemed to conclude with the attitude – C’mon you and we are better than that! Further, the players’ behavior toward their on-field opponent was one of respect.

Will you be a coach to others who might need your help?

Mom Was Right!

On the TunneySide of Sports January 20, 2020 #779 Up next...Mom was right! On the TunneySide of Sports January 20, 2020 #779 Up next… Mom Was Right

After further review… As a kid, whenever I asked my mom if I could do something that bordered on out-of-the-ordinary or perhaps even illegal and used the excuse “Well, Billy (our next-door neighbor) did it.” Mom would counter, “Well, if Billy jumped off his roof, would you?” Her message, obviously, was to get me to see the logic or illegality of my intention.

In today’s example, it was the illegality of the Houston Astros in the 2017 World Series using video cameras to capture the stealing of signs of their opponents, which may have caused irreputable damage not only to them but to MLB as well. Yes, the stealing of signs from Little League to the major leagues has always been an acceptable act in baseball. Actually, in most sports trying to see what your opponent is planning has been a way of attempting to get a jump on them. Thou Shall Not Steal, one of the 10 Commandments in the Jewish Torah as well that of children age five and older, is universally understood.

Of course, it does happen in other sports as it did to the New England Patriots in 2007. The era of technology seems to have caught-up to sports franchises before they could “right their ships.” Certainly, some teams may have attempted it before but were not caught. “Well, Billy did it” (my alibi) doesn’t really cut it – never did.

What happened to “just do the right thing!” which is what Houston Astros Owner Jim Crane did. To recap, when the Astros played in the 2017 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers the Astros were found guilty of sign-stealing using electronics. Astros employees in the team’s video replay room were decoding opponents’ signs using their center field cameras. The Astros bench would call their video room, obtain the sign, then bang a bat on a trash can telling the batter —  2 bangs would be an off-speed pitch, i.e., curveball, slider etc., and no bangs meant fastball.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s investigation resulted in Astros manager A. J. Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow being suspended from MLB for one year. Manfred said while it’s impossible to determine if this misdeed actually impacted the results of that game, it did cause significant “harm to the game.”

Astros owner Crane who had hired both Hinch and Luhnow fired them saying that while both may have not been directly involved, they knew what was happening and should have put a stop to it. The Astros were fined $5 million dollars and will forfeit their next two first and second-round amateur draft picks.

Will you put your integrity foremost when called upon to correct a misdeed?

The .G.O.A.T.

Tom Brady The G.O.A.T.On the TunneySide of Sports January 13, 2020 #778 Up next… The G.O.A.T.

After further review… He wondered if he was good enough and considered dropping out. He met with the head coach who advised him to focus on himself instead of the competition. He decided to stay. He got up at six A.M. and began running the bleachers.

He went to a meeting room and watched game film where he studied every position memorizing each player’s responsibility as well as studying schemes and game formations.

He was a backup quarterback to Brian Griese. When Griese graduated, Tom Brady, thought to be the starting quarterback for the Wolverines but became (again) backup to Drew Henson. In the 2000 NFL draft, the New England Patriots drafted Brady in the sixth round at number 199th.

At the New England training camp in 2000, Brady was the 4th quarterback playing behind Drew Bledsoe, John Friesz and Michael Bishop, but soon replaced Bledsoe who became injured. Brady became the Patriots starting quarterback and never has been replaced as a starter since.

Will you focus on how you can become better by putting in extra time and effort?
