To the Moon and Back!

Alan Shephard - To the Moon and BackOn the TunneySide of Sports July 22, 2019, #753 To the Moon and Back!

After further review… During this recent July week (July 20th to be exact), most of us in the United States of America took a leave from all the political bashing going on in Washington D.C. to celebrate the 50th anniversary of America’s first Moon landing, Apollo 11, with Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. For many, it recalled what happened in 1969. Sports celebrities, Jim Nantz, Verne Lundquist, Al Michaels, Bob Costas, among others, remembered where they were and what they were doing at that time.

For me, I was principal at Fairfax High (Los Angeles). It was summer school and remember it well.  Most adults remember the excitement of that landing.

The follow-up honor for me was the friendship I was fortunate enough to have with Astronaut Alan Bartlett Shepard in the 1980s.  Commander Shepard was the fifth person to land on the moon with Apollo 14 in 1971. Not only did Shepard walk on the moon, but he also hit four golf balls with a 6-iron he had snuck on board.

In the mid-1980s, I was invited to speak at a Positive Thinking Rally (as it was called then) in Fresno, California. It was a day-long program with some dozen speakers. I was slated to be the second speaker in the morning session. Commander Shepard and his wife Louise were seated in the second row with his presentation scheduled right after the luncheon. It was an honor to be on that program — Dr. Ruth Westheimer was scheduled to follow me. The highlight of the day was George H.W. Bush, the 41st President on the United States, but at the time was the sitting Vice-President. The final event of the day was singer-dancer-actor Debbie Reynolds. She was terrific.

Commander Shepard and I connected after that since we were both members of the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. We hit balls together on the driving range and even played a round or two. One evening at our country clubs’ special event, we happened to be sitting at the same dinner table. Would you like to have dinner with an Astronaut? Alan was generous with the answers to questions from his table companions. By some coincidence, the four of us, Alan,  Louise, my wife Linda and I walked to the parking lot at the same time.

It was one of those beautiful evenings in Monterey, California and as we reached the parking lot, we were struck by how gorgeous the full moon appeared. Commander Shepard, with no prompting, looked up and said, “Every time I see that I think ‘how could I ever have walked on that son-of-a-bitch.” Typical Alan, who died 21-years ago yesterday. I still miss him.

This is one of my favorite pictures of me together with Alan Shepard.

Meritocracy

On the TunneySide of Sports July 15, 2019 #752.1 Up next... Meritocracy! On the TunneySide of Sports July 15, 2019, #752 Meritocracy

After further review… ”Meritocracy?” Huh? You can look it up! But, let me save you some time. Meritocracy: “A social system, society, or organization in which people get success or power because of their abilities, not because of their money or social position.” Some are challenging the unequal pay of women vs what men are paid in the same sport. This is not new. However, it has gained strength with the recent surge of women in the sports world.

In my history from the world of education, I have not experienced pay inequity. Teachers’ pay in the public-school business was based on the amount of tenure and education credit earned. In the world of officiating, pay is usually equal for men and women in the same sport at the same level. Different levels paid different wages.

The United States women’s soccer victory in the World Cup brought the issue of equal pay front-and-center. I am not privy to what the pay level is for each gender in soccer, but one writer indicated that since the women have won the World Cup championship and the men have not, women should receive at least equal pay. Should pay be based on winning?

Having said that, it is quite evident that the 2019 NBA champion Toronto Raptors T*E*A*M has undoubtedly received a greater reward than the eventual WNBA champion will. Why the discrepancy? Has meritocracy failed here? Or is because there is more money invested in the NBA than in the WNBA? Do corporate sponsorships play an important part? Why does the men’s PGA champion get a greater paycheck than the women’s PGA champion? Is that fair?

On the other hand, who can – or should – determine how much a champion/winner receives? Can the idea of equal pay be forced on someone or on some entity? Since it is their money, do companies have the right to determine? Some NBA players, playing in the same position, e.g., power forward, receive a greater salary than others. Should all power-forwards be rewarded with the same game salary? Who and how determine this? Is winning part of this equation?

I have always believed: there is nothing so unequal as the equal treatment of unequal’s! There are many questions to be resolved in this equal pay discussion.

Will you log-in your thoughts regarding equal pay in the world of sports?

Free Agent FRENZY!

NBA free agencyOn the TunneySide of Sports July 8, 2019, #751 Free Agent FRENZY!

After further review… A National Basketball Association (NBA) report recently indicated that some two hundred, yep, that’s 200, players this year have the option for free agency! That may not have been what Curt Flood had in mind on November 24, 1969 when he went to New York City to meet with Marvin Miller, then Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), as it was called. Flood said he was going to sue major league baseball.

“No one is going to own me,” said Flood to Miller. “I demand my rights,’ Flood continued. Miller knew that if Flood won it would change the way professional teams would retain their players – and it did! Free agency has grown dramatically in the last 50 years in all professional sports.

Perhaps your favorite player is one of the 200 mentioned above and you may or may not agree with his choice of free agency and the T*E*A*M to which he is planning to join. This is not about who is right or wrong or where he goes, it is more about the massive movement that was created by free agency. A professional coach told me that in his opinion many players who chose free agency soon regretted they did. Their better choice, he said, was to re-negotiate with his original team. However, there are many reasons for choosing free agency.

One that happened a few years ago was when LeBron James, then of the Cleveland Cavaliers, said he was “taking my talents to South Beach” presumably to join other players who would also opt for free agency and create a franchise to dominate the NBA and win championships, which it did with James, Wade, and Bosh. KD and Irving are planning that with the Nets.

Free agency has morphed NBA teams into more “business” than “sport.” Well, you say, it IS a business. Could it be as successful without the money coming from television and marketing resources if players remained with the team that drafted them? The frenzy that is occurring in today’s game has fans confused.

Certainly, the fans of each franchise want –no, demand – a championship this season! Instant gratification in vogue today insists on an immediate championship. None of the “wait-till-next-year” business. No more building a team mode. It’s gotta be now! Or maybe never.

Will you log-in your opinion on the value of free agency?
