Great Expectations!

After further review… There’s an old joke that answers the question; “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” Seemingly, the question about this iconic venue is about directions-to; but the answer often comes: “Practice – Practice – Practice.” I was reminded of this when I read about a newly released documentary by director Gabe Polsky In Search of Greatness which attempts to discover athletic genius. Coaches have been seeking that answer since the beginning of time.

Certainly, superior athletic talent must be at the top, if not close to it. When you research the records of athletes in their respective halls of fame, you’ll find superior talent in their resumes. In my book, It’s the Will, Not the Skill, which highlights the principals and philosophy of success of Herm Edwards, now head football coach at Arizona State University, we state that while many may have the skill for greatness, success is often achieved by those who have the will.

Where does one start in listing qualities of those who possess that will. Of the athletes I have known who have risen to greatness, it seems to start with preparation! Let me remind you that Noah built his ark, before it started to rain! So, practice, practice, practice makes sense. However, practice doesn’t make perfect; only perfect practice makes perfect! In whatever you do, take time to do it the right way. For athletes, just being in the gym or on the field, isn’t enough to improve their abilities until they are performing at their very best every time.

Coaching can be of great benefit. I’ve heard many coaches remark about an athlete, “He/She is  very coachable.” The know-it-all-athletes with extra-special skills all too often flatten-out, if they are not willing to go that extra-mile and seek coaching to help them grow. You will find that road on the extra-mile to greatness is never crowded! While a coach may not always be there to help, athletes can learn by observing. This philosophy, BTW, can be applied to anything one does – on or off the field.

When you observed Jerry Rice catching a pass or Steph Curry dribbling a ball, please remember that each has done that same drill hundreds of times in practice before ever stepping before the public. Preparation with perfect practice can result in great expectations.

Will you take time to prepare in everything you do?

“One and Done” – Gone?

TunneySide One and Done” – Gone?

Up next… “One and Done” – Gone?

After further review… The powers-that-be of the National Basketball Association decided several years ago to deny talented high school basketball players entry into the NBA draft until they  either stayed out one year or were 19 years-of-age or attended college for one year. Well, that one and done is now – about to be done! The NBA is replacing it with the “G” league!

In its infinite wisdom the NBA has now enhanced the “G” league. It was originally called the “D” (for development) league. The NBA is offering a talented player, just out of high school, to play in the “G” league for – wait-for-it –$125,000 for one-year! One hundred twenty-five large! If you are thinking about being an agent for a player who’s qualified, starting base is $125,000.

My talent graduating from Alhambra High School (CA.) wouldn’t have qualified me. I chose Occidental College (CA) on the basis that my 4 years would earn a bachelor’s degree, a teaching credential, and a major where I could follow my coaching dream. OXY also provided me an opportunity to play at the collegiate level, although not Division One, but play I did. The NBA was never an opportunity for me, and in the 1950s it had not attained the fame nor financial level of today. I have been a staunch advocate of the student-athlete concept stressing that one goes to college as a student first and participates on an athletic T*E*A*M after classes. Although I have been in the minority for many years, I still believe that — but losing ground fast.

I’ve also been an advocate of a player not being eligible for professional sports until he has graduated – normally 4 years, although many can earn a diploma in three years. So now, the “G” league of the NBA allows–in a player who does not go to college. I’m okay with that – believing college is not for everyone.  Some may take up a trade after high school. Of further concern is the recruitment of an athlete in his high school years for the “G” league – think LeBron or Koby! BTW, do you know what the “G” stands for? Gatorade! Hmmm! Money talks!

Will you log-in your thoughts about players becoming professional athletes as teen-agers?

Just do the right thing!

Reuben Foster ArrestOn The TunneySide of Sports December 3, 2018 #721 Up next… Just do the right thing!

After further review… The question I am asked often, after 31 years as a National Football League on-field official, is: Who is or was your favorite T*E*A*M? I am sure other officials are asked the same question. My answer now and always has been that I don’t have a favorite team for the basic reason:  “I don’t care who wins.” In fact, the title of my first book was: Impartial Judgment, since it’s incumbent upon every game official to remain unbiased. The integrity of the NFL begins with and maintained by its game officials. Just do the right thing!

The recent case of NFL player Reuben Foster brings the integrity issue to light. To refresh, Foster was a 2017 first round draft choice of the San Francisco 49ers after being an All-American linebacker at the University of Alabama. On the field Foster was a dominant (in capital letters) linebacker, off the field he was not an upright citizen. The 49ers were willing to gamble that their environment could help Foster refine to be a worthy citizen. That didn’t work.

Foster is known for making unwise personal decisions. In 2017 he was “kicked out” of the NFL Combine for a failed drug test and an altercation with a hospital employee. At the start of this 2018 season he was suspended for two games by the NFL for a marijuana charge coupled with a gun charge – a loaded gun found on his bathroom floor. Lately, the 49ers felt that Foster was “really taking some positive steps” and buying into the commitment he had made. The 49ers had made it clear to him, there are consequences for egregious actions. In this latest incident, Foster had taken his “girl-friend” to Tampa for the ‘niners game with the Tampa Bay Bucs. The night before the Bucs game she claimed he was physically abusive to her and called the police. Upon Foster’s arrest the 49ers Immediately released him. Right thing to do!

Placing Foster on waivers meant that any team could contact and sign him. He couldn’t play or attend practices, because he was placed on the NFL commissioner’s “exempt” list. The Washington Redskins wanted first choice when he was eligible. What was the Redskins thinking? Did they need his linebacking skills so badly that they were going to overlook his off-field behavior? Putting a player with this kind of history on your roster is not doing the right thing. Perhaps the Foster case will create a stronger league rule about off-field (mis)behavior.

Will you log-in about your belief on doing the right thing?
