On Being Grateful

Tunney ThanksOn The TunneySide of Sports November 19, 2018 #719 Up next… On Being Grateful

After further review…  With the Thanksgiving holiday arriving this week (Wow! – already?) I am reminded to “count your blessings,” as my father regularly reminded me. As a native Californian, I anguish for those affected by this month’s horrific fires. Lives were lost; homes and personal possessions destroyed; families disrupted! Hopefully, those affected will gather their strengths and courage to move-on. Easy to say; hard to do. Prayers continue.

As a former NFL on-field official, I am certainly grateful for my 31-year career with the league. As my long-time friend Herm Edwards, now Arizona State Head Football Coach and former NFL player and coach has said “playing in the NFL is a privilege, not a right.” Try telling that to LeVeon Bell, erstwhile running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Erstwhile, since Bell decided to forego this 2018 season. He did not report to pre-season training camp nor to the Steelers regular season, because the Steelers placed a “franchise tag” on him for this year. A franchise tag is a way teams try to retain their best unrestricted free agent, which Bell had decided to be.

Not reporting to the T*E*A*M by Tuesday, November 14, 2018, Bell missed out on his $14.5 million in salary. If Bell had reported last week, he would have been paid $855,000 for doing nothing but staying home. Bell was seeking an extension on his $14.5 tender that would provide him “long-term financial security.” The guy on-the-street is heard to say, “Huh?” Bell is considered one of the premier running backs in the NFL and hopes that becoming a free agent another team will sign him next year agreeing to his salary demands. There is no issue here with Bell wanting to negotiate an extension, but if he doesn’t get it, one wonders what other job in the real-world would pay him what his current Steelers contract is offering?

“Often players who do not report wanting a better ‘deal’ from another team are more than likely not to get it.” I’ve heard that from more than one NFL coach or general manager. That player then returns to his former team or, embarrassedly, takes less than he wanted. Speaking of T*E*A*M, wonder what Bell’s current thinking is about how has abandoned his team – a team with playoff potential. Granted, his replacement, James Conner is doing a good job. A running back drafted in the third round in 2017 from University of Pittsburgh, Conner has a four-year contract of $3,161,523 – a far cry from Bell’s one-year contract of $14,544.000.

How will you express gratitude for your blessings?

Tanking

nfl losing records 2018On The TunneySide of Sports November 12, 2018 #718 Up next… Tanking

After further review… The National Football League is in the second half of its 2018 season, with some T*E*A*Ms sitting on losing records. Fans of those teams are shouting “Wait’ll next year,” hoping that if their team is at or near the bottom of the league, they qualify for a first round draft choice, thereby gaining a quality player for the 2019 season. While some fans with this attitude have given up hope for this year, it is unethical for teams, coaches, and/or players to do so.

Signs of giving-up, or tanking, at this point of the season are like trading-away quality players for future draft choices or claiming “injuries” for some players by holding them out, thus allowing them to heal for next season. All of the above and other so-called strategies, that allude to tanking, are closely monitored by the NFL. It is dishonest to fans, who pay top-dollar for tickets, to be cheated out of the best performance from players and coaches every game.

It behooves players and coaches to follow the Edwards Code. Midway through Herm Edwards tenure as head coach of the New York Jets, he was asked by a Jets reporter (it being apparent the Jets record was not on the winning side and playoff-chances looked dismal) did he (Coach Edwards) plan to forego this season and look for a better Jets future? Thunder and lighting filled that room as Edwards verbally stormed with “You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game!” He followed with the statement that every player and coach on the Jets T*E*A*M will give his best effort to win every game this season.

Whether a team does or doesn’t win is not the issue, but each player and coach must practice and play to achieve a victory – every time/every game! The late HOF coach Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers has said, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” The interpretation here is that you play to win – it’s your approach to whatever needs to be done. Moreover, when a player does not play with his full effort, he is more likely to get injured and thus truncate his career. Similar for a coach since his players can see that lack of effort and soon will not follow his coaching. Further, it certainly can be detrimental to any coach’s future.

Will you log-in your thoughts about why you should give your best effort every time?

World Series 2018

On the TunneySide of Sports November 5, 2018 #717 Up next...World Series, 2018On The TunneySide of Sports November 5, 2018 #717 Up next… World Series 2018

After further review… Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox on their recent success as Major League Baseball’s world champions! Their five games to one win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the finals was impressive. In fact, their season with 108 regular season victories and their defeat of the New York Yankees, who had a 100-season win, and their defeat of the Houston Astros with 104 wins certainly must qualify them as one of the best in Red Sox baseball lore.

While it was difficult for the Dodgers to lose in their home park (Dodger Stadium, aka Chavez Ravine), the “Blue” will certainly give a standing ovation to the Sox. The news media reported that the victory celebration at Dodger Stadium lasted two hours with World Champ hats, World Champ Tee-shirts and googles, provided by the MLB, adorned by every Sox player. Why the googles? Well, with the rampant squirting of champagne and beer all over players, coaches and T*E*A*M personnel, the googles provided eye protection. It was an on-field mess.

Speaking of a mess – the spittle by players and coaches from both teams during that series was ugly. It seemed every time the Fox TV cameras focused on a player or coach in the dugout, you could expect an expectoration (is that a redundancy?). Many players and coaches plant smokeless tobacco (called chaw or dip) in their mouth-cheek during games. Others use gum (some with bubble-gum) as a method to calm nerves or maybe just an old baseball habit.

Regarding the use of smokeless tobacco, may I remind young and old ball players that the late Joe Garagiola, former All-Star MLB catcher and the late Hall of Fame Umpire Doug Harvey both suffered throat cancer later in life. And both travelled the country speaking about its dangers.

Others chew and spit Sunflower seeds continuously. You probably have not seen a baseball dugout following a game, but I have. UGH! You wouldn’t want you or your children to see that mess, let alone walk through it. Football sidelines following a game are similar, but not quite as filthy, with basketball sidelines cleaner due to their close fan proximity.

On the bright side of this World Series was the attitude and behavior of the players toward each other. I watched players and managers behavior very closely and did not see any trash-talking or taunting of opponents. A trait to be admired – and hopefully emulated in other sports teams.

Will you log-in on your impressions of the 2018 World Series?
